One of the country’s most extraordinary scenic trail systems awaits your discovery in Westchester County.

Visitors and locals alike enjoy the picturesque scenery and unspoiled parks, picnic spots, historic sites and nature preserves unfettered by crowds. Enjoy an active day or getaway, whether you choose hiking, running, biking, or just a leisurely stroll among nature’s beauty. In winter, cross-country skiers revel in Westchester’s snow-covered trails. Trail details include distances, access points, historical notes, sites of interest and parking locations, if available, near the trails’ main access points. Before setting out, please remember: Choose routes and trip lengths suitable to your individual abilities. Motorized vehicles are not permitted on any trail. Be alert to motor traffic at crossings. Walkers, runners and hikers should keep to the right and allow bicyclists to pass on the left. All trails close at dusk. Regulations for pets/leashed dogs vary by location.

Briarcliff-Peekskill Trailway

Unpaved Hiking Trail

No passport required to marvel at the second-largest hand-hewn stone structure in the world, second only to the Giza Pyramids in Egypt—just hike this trailway to enjoy the magnificent Croton Dam spillway and its cascading waterfall at Croton Gorge Park. Or delight in panoramic views, complete with a birds-eye view of the Hudson River, from the perch of the 560-foot high Spitzenberg Mountain at the Blue Mountain Reservation in Peekskill. In the mood for a more leisurely stroll? Then amble along the unpaved pathways of the 12-mile linear park, built on lands that were originally intended to become a parkway. No bicycles on this trail.

Bronx River Pathway

Paved Hiking & Biking Trail

The 807-acre Bronx River Reservation is a picturesque backdrop along this paved trail located immediately adjacent to the Bronx River Parkway. The trek spans central Westchester in three sections, totaling nine miles from Valhalla to Yonkers.

Unpaved Hiking Trail

Natural beauty and rich history come together on this 15-mile unpaved trail loop system that links numerous open spaces and spans five municipalities, utilizing the Hutchinson River Pathway and the Leatherstocking Trail, as well as existing trail systems within the County and local parks and nature preserves. It winds through woods and wetlands that are home to an abundance of wildlife, and through neighborhoods touched by the lives of Thomas Paine, Anne Hutchinson, James Fenimore Cooper and other great figures of American history. Open to hikers, walkers and runners, portions of the trail are also appropriate for equestrians.

North-South County Trailway

Paved Hiking & Biking Trail

Begin this enjoyable trail in Eastview in the Town of Greenburgh and head north to Baldwin Place in Somers. This paved, multi-use trail spans 22.1 miles in Westchester County. At Baldwin Place, it becomes the Putnam Trailway, continuing seven miles to Carmel. The North County Trailway is situated on what was part of the former Putnam Division of the New York Central Railroad. The “Old Put,” as it was fondly referred to by commuters, provided freight and passenger service from 1881 to 1958 between the Bronx and Putnam County. See map for points of access along this trail.
